Hospital pay breast op compensation
A WOMAN who says she was left physically and emotionally scarred after undergoing breast surgery at a Barnsley hospital has won her battle for compensation.
The woman, who does not wish to be identified, has been awarded a "substantial sum".
Raleys Solicitors negotiated the settlement against Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, on behalf of the 55-year-old breast cancer sufferer.
She underwent a mastectomy, reconstruction and breast reduction operations between October 2003 and April 2005 - but has since needed treatment to rectify problems caused by the operations and needs further corrective surgery.
The woman's case is one of 12 against the trust being handled by the law firm. The exact amount of her compensation has not been revealed.
Solicitor Michelle Gyte, of Raleys, said: "No amount of money can take away the pain and scars - both physical and mental - that she has suffered through over the last five years, but now she has a sense of justice being served."
The three initial operations were performed by different medical staff, with the reduction carried out by consultant breast surgeon Puvaneswary Markandoo.
Ms Markandoo was suspended from the hospital in July 2006, after concerns were raised by a number of patients, and the General Medical Council is currently carrying out an investigation.
