Hooded man sexually assaults Sheffield student on street

A Sheffield student has been sexually assaulted on a street by a hooded man who ran from the scene following the attack.

The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday morning at around 3.15am.

South Yorkshire Police said they were called to a property in Westbourne Road close to the Botanical Gardens, where a 19-year-old woman reported that she had been sexually assaulted by an unknown man outside.

Police have stepped up patrols around the local area in response to the incident.

Officers say they are ‘working closely with the university’ to provide reassurance to students following the attack.

A spokesman for the force said: “The man is understood to have approached the woman from behind before sexually assaulting her and running from the scene.”

The suspect is described as being white, aged between 18 to early 20s and about 5ft 8ins – 5ft 10ins tall.

A police spokesman said: “He is believed to have been wearing a black hooded top with the hood up and dark trousers.

“Did you witness the incident? Did you see a man matching the description in the area at the time?”
