HERO Sheffield soldier Karl Ley has been offered honorary membership of Stannington and District Royal British Legion.
The 29-year-old Sgt Maj, of the Royal Logistics Corps, has been awarded the George Medal – the highest honour for gallantry when not under enemy fire – for defusing more bombs on his last tour of Afghanistan than any other British soldier in history.
Warrant Officer Ley told members: “We did 139 improvised explosive devices in six months, which sounds a lot, but it was less than one a day.
“Some days we’d do none and then the next we’d do 14.
“They’re a bit like buses, IEDs. You miss one and then loads come along afterwards.”
Chairman David Robinson said they wanted to show their gratitude to Karl.
