Just one of the top 10 highest-earning consultants used by Sheffield Council was a city company, opposition Liberal Democrat councillors have revealed.
Sero Consulting - the sole Sheffield firm in the top 10 for March - received £181,791 out of nearly £900,000 paid to consultants that month.
Two of the other nine firms, Wessex Archaeology and Ove Arup, have offices in Sheffield. They were paid £50,000 and £19,213 for work in March.
Other companies receiving large sums included Ian Farmer Associates, who received over £100,000 in consultancy fees in March 2013 and are located in Gateshead.
Coun Ian Auckland, Sheffield Council’s Liberal Democrat spokesman for business, said: “It’s clear that this wasteful spending has been lining the pockets of highly-paid consultants from anywhere but Sheffield.
“It’s hard to believe a better service couldn’t be provided locally.”
