PALS of a Sheffield soldier killed in Afghanistan are holding a fundraising football tournament in his memory for the second year running.

Current and former members of Third Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment have organised the event at the transport workers’ ground Meadowhead, on Saturday, April 19.

They are friends of Corporal Liam Riley, from Killamarsh, and Lance Corporal Graham Shaw, from Huddersfield, both of whom died in Afghanistan last year.

Cpl Riley was awarded a posthumous Mention in Despatches after he was blown up while bravely trying to save LCpl Shaw, who had been fatally injured in a bomb blast moments earlier.

The event aims to raise money for wounded soldiers’ charity Help for Heroes and six teams are taking part, including one from 3 Yorks, plus a team of retired Sheffield professional footballers, captained by former Blade Carl Bradshaw.

Organiser Richard Jones, a former member of 3 Yorks, said: “The event is in memory of Liam and Graham.

“Last year, we held the event at Abbeydale and raised £3,000. We hope to do better this time.”
