Helping youngsters enjoy sporting fun

HUNDREDS of South Yorkshire young people are experiencing the excitement of sport for the first time as part of work designed to celebrate the Olympic legacy.

So far over 1,200 young people have enjoyed up to eight weeks of coaching in a sport of their choice, during the first six months of Sport England’s Sportivate Olympic initiative.

Funded by the National Lottery, Sportivate is aimed at young people who currently aren’t playing sport, giving them the chance to find a sport they enjoy.

They’re then helped to find a club or venue to take part.

The scheme has embraced all types of sporting and fitness-based activities, including boxing, cycling and snowsports. Participants have also been able to train for a specific event or challenge.

One successful project has been the Sportivate Amateur Boxing Association Mosque Project, which has been working with Sheffield’s Wolseley Street Mosque.

A dozen young people had the opportunity to learn to ski under the guidance of a qualified instructor at the Sharks Ski Club at Sheffield Ski Village.

Another project, Sportivate Inclusive Cycling, involves offering cycling sessions for disabled youngsters in Barnsley.
