Help victims survive floods

THE plight of Pakistan's people has touched thousands of hearts. But few more so than local man Nick Faheen who took charge of a consignment of aid material for the victims of the floods which have devastated the country.

He took time from work to personally join representatives of the Hope for Help Foundation on a journey to Pakistan where he helped make up and deliver parcels of food and essential goods for the stricken population who have been made homeless.

Now back in Sheffield, Nick has pledged to do even more.

He is an example of a small army of people who have devoted every spare moment to do whatever they can to play their part in helping flood victims.

Though each individual effort is tiny in the scale of the disaster, every bit of assistance builds to a massive effort.

Therefore we urge all who feel compassion for the victims of the Pakistan disaster to help them survive their living nightmare.

Moving in the right direction on crime

IT certainly is good news that the number of criminals who revert to crime after serving their sentences has fallen by 14 per cent. And, as a representative of South Yorkshire Probation service says, this shows that the county is a 'significantly safer' place to live.

Working on the number of re-offenders in previous years, officials had expected 2,240 people would return to their law breaking ways over the last year. In fact, this fell to 1,927.

It is true that this is still a large and unacceptable figure. But it shows that we are moving in the right direction and if the momentum can be maintained it will be better for all of us.

Officials are aware of the importance of their work and we are delighted to hear them declare that they know there is no place for complacency in light of the recent successes and they are to continue their determined efforts to bring down crime rates by convincing criminals that they must not re-offend once they have completed their sentence.

Use it or lose it

CONGRATULATIONS to bus company Stagecoach for giving a doomed service a second chance after a rival business decided it was not worth their while to continue with the route.

It means that the people of Chapeltown and High Green will continue to have a link to the city centre. And first impressions are that it is highly valued by them, with around 700 people a day making use of the service.

Of course, bus companies are ruled by commercial considerations and services need to make a profit. So we appeal to local people to continue making the most of their saved service, or risk the chance of losing it once more.
