HARD-UP, vulnerable and disabled people are being offered help and financial support from Yorkshire Water.
It is promoting its Helping Hands scheme during what it calls ‘these difficult times’ of a struggling economy.
Customers who are struggling to pay bills can apply for help through YW’s Community Trust, a charity which donates money to help clear outstanding and overdue accounts.
People are advised to call the firm on 0845 1242424 to see if they are eligible.
The firm is also asking customers to identify the most disadvantaged people who could need help.
The Helping Hands scheme targets elderly, disabled or seriously ill customers and offers assistance with reading and understanding bills.
It will also arrange to send them in large print or Braille and arrange home visits for regular meter readings, or to update them on work in the area.
It also provides free bottled water to those with a serious illness or disability when the supply is interrupted.
Matthew Kettlewell, customer engagement adviser at Yorkshire Water, said: “We recognise that these are difficult times and that there are disadvantaged customers out there who could really do with some extra help and support, whether it be reading and understanding their bill, or help actually paying it.
“Clearly not everyone is eligible for our Helping Hands support scheme, but we believe that there are a lot of people out there who do qualify but are missing out possibly because they simply aren’t aware such services exist.
“To help them, we need to know who they are and that’s why we’re urging them, or those who know them, to sign up to our Helping Hands register.
“It only takes a moment to do and it could mean they receive extra help and support at a time when they are most in need of it.”
