Help for young unemployed

UP TO 6,000 jobless young people in Sheffield could benefit from the Government’s £1 billion Youth Contract plan to assist unemployed young people aged 16 to 24.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Lib Dem MP for Sheffield Hallam, has launched the scheme, which aims to ‘ensure all jobless young people are earning or learning again’.

In Sheffield, 5,995 18-to-24-year olds are currently in receipt of Jobseeker’s Allowance and would stand to benefit from the Youth Contract.

Mr Clegg said: “The number of young people out of work is a figure that is too high. Youth unemployment, in my view, is one of the biggest challenges we face as a country.”

Funding from the Youth Contract will be used to subsidise employers to create posts and provide more work experience.
