Heat warning over thieves
RESIDENTS in South Yorkshire are being urged not to fall victim to sneak-in thieves during the heatwave by keeping windows and doors locked.
Police warn "it only takes seconds" for a burglar to sneak in through an unlocked door or to reach through an open window.
Detectives are also urging people to never leave keys near a window or door to stop thieves using a hook or magnet on a stick pushed through a letterbox to get the keys.
And they warn residents not to leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place such as under the doormat or in a flowerpot.
Detective Inspector Phil Etheridge said: "If you are going away on holiday don't leave your curtains closed during the daytime, ask a neighbour to look after your home and use timer switches to turn on some lights when it gets dark. Also, don't forget to cancel any milk or newspaper deliveries when you go away.
