Q: My husband has been told by his doctor that he has an enlarged prostate. Are there any natural remedies that might help with his symptoms? He often wakes in the night to use the bathroom and says he feels as though he’s not emptying his bladder properly.

A: Prostate disorders are much more common than most people think, affecting over 50% of men over the age of fifty and almost all men over the age of eighty. A walnut-sized gland located below the bladder, the prostate surrounds the urethra which drains the bladder.

As men get older the prostate gland starts to enlarge, slowly squashing the urethra and reducing the amount of space available for urine to pass through. Although uncomfortable it is not life-threatening.

As you describe, symptoms can include a need to urinate frequently especially at night, weak or interrupted urinary flow and a feeling of not being able to empty the bladder properly.

Saw Palmetto can help. Used centuries ago by the Native Americans, the much documented Saw Palm contains precious oily berries that can help to reduce the symptoms of prostate enlargement.

Likewise, if your husband’s condition worsens, he passes blood or is feverish, he should return to see his GP.
