WORK is under way on building a multi-million pound centre for people with learning disabilities in Sheffield.

Firshill Rise, which will provide bed and community-based services for people with complex needs and challenging behaviours, is set to replace outdated facilities at Northern General Hospital when it opens next April.

The £3.3m project from Sheffield Heath and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust will incorporate eight beds, two self-contained flats, and a series of clinical and activity rooms in a bid to prevent inappropriate admissions to hospital for those with learning disabilities.

Kevan Taylor, chief executive of SHSC, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for significant service development for those with complex needs.”
