Volunteers needed for new research into bones
Research: Dr Paul Dimitri wants volunteers for a study into bone development.
RESEARCH on the effect of body weight on the development of bones is to begin at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
Volunteers are needed to sign up for the project, which is being carried out by hospital medics and Sheffield University academics.
The study involves using bone-scanning equipment to look at internal bone structure to see if body weight and hormones affect bone development during growth.
Dr Paul Dimitri, consultant paediatric endocrinologist and a research fellow at the university’s academic unit of bone metabolism, said: “At the moment, we do not fully understand the impact on the skeleton of being overweight in childhood and adulthood.
“If we have a better understanding of the factors that affect bone strength, we can give better advice.”
