A former Sheffield United star, boxing aces and Spider-Man all lined up among hundreds other runners to raise vital charity cash.

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s annual Run in the Park event took place in Graves Park and attracted a field of 800 - so many that the event was delayed.

The event offered three-kilometre and 10km races – with the latter featuring sporting stars including former Blades captain Chris Morgan, Olympic athletes Sarah Stevenson and Joslyn Hoyte-Smith, Sheffield Steelers’ staff Jason Hewitt and Ben Hall and boxers Adam Etches and Scott Jenkins.

Speaking at the start of the race, Chris said: “It’s great - I’ve already seen Spider-Man go past.

“Whether it’s a fun run of a serious run, the turn-out and the representation is great.

He said: “I must admit since retiring I’ve not done a great deal of running but I got invited along and agreed to do it so I thought I best get my trainers on.

“I’ve always loved to get involved I’m proud to be a patron for Weston Park and however I can help I will even it’s doing 10k’s in the rain.

Chris finished the event in a time of 45 minutes and 40 seconds.

Lucy King, Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity community fundraiser, said: “We were overwhelmed by the number of people who joined us at Run in the Park this year and helped raise money to shape the future of cancer services at Weston Park Hospital – some raising more than £3,000 in sponsorship and we simply cannot thank people enough for their utmost support.”

The charity needs to raise more than £1.8 million this year to finance new projects that will keep patients at the forefront of cancer treatment.

Last year, Run in the Park raised more than £40,000 which helped fund various projects to enable the continued improvement of Weston Park; including the expansion of research studies, improving the way cancer treatments are delivered and supporting the ongoing care provisions of patients and their families affected by cancer.
