A tree of remembrance is to be planted in Sheffield this week in memory of people missing in military conflicts and disasters around the world.

The South Yorkshire branch of the British Red Cross is planting the tree at the Walled Garden in Meersbrook Park on Friday, to mark the International Day of the Disappeared.

The ceremony is happening at 11am, with a minute’s silence at midday.

Becky Lehane, the Red Cross’ international family tracing co-ordinator in Yorkshire, said: “Every year, hundreds of people across the world go missing due to conflict situations or disasters. For those relatives left behind, not knowing the fate of their loved ones becomes an ever-present anguish. This is a time to show solidarity with them.”
