Health chiefs in Sheffield are encouraging people to visit pharmacies and not their GP if they come down with winter ailments.
The NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group is backing a national campaign called Self Care Week, which runs until Sunday.
Patients are warned about the overuse of antibiotics – which are ineffective for colds – as well as given advice about treating common illnesses at home with over-the-counter remedies.
Dr Maria Read, the CCG’s clinical lead for long-term conditions, said: “We want to support people in knowing what to do if they fall ill this winter, and of the excellent resources available within communities to help them to choose well in taking care of their own health.”
