A daredevil cliff diver is to use his expertise for a good cause by overseeing efforts in a charity sports contest in Sheffield.
Matt Cowen – who regularly jumps from heights of up to 92ft – has joined the judging panel for Sheffield Splash, which is happening next Thursday at the city’s Ponds Forge International Sports Centre.
Top business professionals from across Sheffield will plunge from the sports centre’s diving boards to raise money for St Luke’s Hospice.
Businesses already signed up include Sheffield Hallam University, Medical Solicitors, the Cupola Gallery and Consult Search.
Matt’s fellow judges will be Olympic diver Ben Swain and Steve Brailey, chief executive of Sheffield International Venues, which runs Ponds Forge.
The City of Sheffield Dive Club is also set to treat guests to a display of spins, twists and turns into the pool.
Mr Brailey said: “It’s fantastic so many organisations and firms have signed up.
“This event is about raising money for a fantastic cause and showcasing incredible young diving talent.
“It’s a sport that requires a lot of courage. We’ll be scoring competitors on approach, take-off – showing good control and balance – elevation and spring, execution and entry.
“Despite the event’s name, we’ll be looking for minimal splash.”
Matt, from Haworth, West Yorkshire, is a star of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, and represented Great Britain at the first High Diving World Championships in Barcelona earlier this year.
