Team effort to cut hours

NURSES at a South Yorkshire hospital are helping the health trust in charge work to meet European rules on the number of hours junior doctors can work.

The system has trained seven advanced nurse practitioners to be able to work on hospital wards providing highly skilled supporting roles to the senior medical and nursing team.

Dr Christine Smith, research fellow in secondary care at the trust, said: “The European Working Time Directive impacts on the number of hours junior doctors are allowed to work.

“All trusts are having to think creatively about the way in which the multi-disciplinary team can best reorganize and adapt.”
