DOZENS of South Yorkshire GPs have stopped using ‘rip-off’ phone numbers months after they were criticised by an MP.
In December, Wentworth and Dearne MP John Healey revealed two thirds of doctors’ surgeries in Rotherham and a third in Barnsley had 0844 or 0845 numbers – which can cost 40p per minute. Now, in Rotherham, although 23 surgeries still have 084 numbers, 21 are due to change to a local code by June.
In Barnsley, the last practice will change to a local number this month.
Mr Healey said: “No-one should pay over the odds to get in touch with their GP.”
