Smokers in Rotherham making a New Year resolution to quit the habit are to get the best support package yet from the NHS.
Free nicotine patches providing savings of up to £90 are available, along with prescription drugs for patients registered with local GPs.
And, as an added incentive, smokers who successfully quit for a month will receive free seven-day leisure centre passes from DC Leisure.
Statistics show smokers who seek the help of their local NHS Stop Smoking Service are four times more likely to succeed.
Simon Lister, service manager for Rotherham, said a new TV campaign was reinforcing the message that if people could see the harm that cigarettes do, they would give up.
He said: “New Year is a time when many of us make resolutions around getting fitter and healthier, and stopping smoking is the single greatest influence you can have on your health. By providing confidential advice and support, free patches and a choice of one-to-one, group or telephone support sessions, we would like to encourage smokers to use our service as they are up to four times more likely to give up with support than on willpower alone.”
