YORKSHIRE Ambulance Service is urging people not to swim in open water over the summer.
Every year the service is called to incidents where people have required emergency attention after swimming in rivers, reservoirs, ponds, quarries, lakes and canals.
But freezing temperatures and treacherous undercurrents make swimming in such locations very dangerous.
Sarah Fatchett, of Yorkshire Ambulance Service, said: “People need to be aware of how dangerous it really is.
“Several lives have already been lost this year.”
