Patients are being told only to attend a South Yorkshire A&E department if it is a genuine emergency - as the unit is being deluged with patients.
Rotherham Hospital’s accident and emergency department is ‘currently under extreme pressures’ with a ‘high volume of patients attending’.
A spokeswoman for the trust said: “The general public are reminded to choose well when accessing health care and only attend accident and emergency in the case of an emergency - serious illness and major injuries.”
She added: “Making the right choice about where to get help when you need it will ensure you receive the best possible treatment, allowing busy services such as A&E to concentrate on helping those most in need.”
Patients needing urgent health advice or treatment when their GP surgery is shut should call NHS 111.
