A LEADING cancer charity has laid down a challenge to businesses across South Yorkshire – asking them to take part in the flagship fundraiser and compete to be the firm who makes the most money.

Macmillan Cancer Support has launched the Corporate Cup competition for the first time this year as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning campaign.

It’s part of The Star Business Challenge, which is asking firms to pick Macmillan as their chosen charity for the year to raise thousands towards their work with cancer patients and their families.

It has been set up as the charity celebrates its 100th anniversary, to ensure their centenary year goes with a fundraising bang.

Rob Turner, charity fundraising manager for Sheffield and Chesterfield, said: “It’s our centenary year and the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is 21 years old. We really wanted to do something special to celebrate. Lots of companies take part because it’s a simple event to hold, you can make it as big or small as you want, and you can boost the amount you raise through raffles, dress down days or other creative ways of fundraising. “

The call is being backed by The Star’s business reporter David Walsh.

He said: “Almost everyone has been touched by cancer in some way so we’re really keen to do something to help Macmillan.

“The Star is already committed to helping raise £100,000 for Macmillan through our Business Challenge. The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is a great way to get involved and the perfect event for workplaces.

“It allows staff to fundraise for Macmillan, whilst socialising with colleagues and customers.

“I would urge local businesses to seriously consider taking part this year to help Macmillan, especially as it’s their centenary”.

The charity is hoping nearly 1,000 coffee mornings will take place throughout South Yorkshire on and around September 30, raising approximately £135,000.

Rob added: “We are determined to make this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning our biggest ever! If you can’t do it on September 30 then just pick another day.
