NEW maternity assistants are helping midwives deliver care to mums at Chesterfield’s maternity unit.
Chesterfield Royal Hospital has created the role of maternity assistants - combining the former jobs of healthcare assistants and midwifery support workers.
Five support workers and 42 healthcare assistants have changed jobs, creating 47 new maternity assistants.
They have each received NVQ training to bring them all up to the same level.
New assistant Jo Clarke said: “It’s much better for the new mums because the midwife is free to do what she’s trained to do.”
