South Yorkshire volunteers have won a special award for raising awareness of diabetes in their community.
The Rotherham Diabetes Group takes part in fundraising activities and recently organised an awareness day to help sufferers manage their condition better.
Members were rewarded for their efforts with the Voluntary Group prize at Diabetes UK’s Inspire Awards ceremony, which was attended by the group’s chairman, John Sargeant, and secretary Terry Fuller.
John said: “It’s fantastic to get this award. It makes it all worthwhile.
“We’ve had terrific feedback on the diabetes awareness day and we are going to do it again next year.”
Linda Wood, regional manager for Diabetes UK, said: “The Rotherham group has worked hard alongside the NHS to raise awareness of diabetes in their local community. Its awareness day was outstanding.
“As an organisation, we couldn’t do what we do without brilliant and dedicated volunteers like those at the Rotherham group.”
Linda added: “Thanks to our network of volunteers, we’re helping people with diabetes manage their condition, campaigning to improve the quality of care available to them, funding pioneering research into the condition and working to stem the rising tide of diabetes.”
