A South Yorkshire MP has urged the Government to solve a ‘crisis in A&E’ after figures showed hospitals in his constituency had spent £1.85 million on stand-in emergency medics.

John Healey, MP for Wentworth and Dearne, said NHS shake-ups had ‘shifted attention from the frontline to the back office’.

Freedom of Information requests found spending on locum A&E doctors at Rotherham Hospital increased from £284,000 in 2009/10 to £1m last year.

At Barnsley Hospital, £859,000 was spent on locums in 2011/12.
