More than 50 million children around the world are infected with tuberculosis, according to a new study by Sheffield University researchers.
The study shows TB in children is a major health problem – and worse than most authorities realise.
The investigators estimated the number of children with TB in the 22 countries with the highest numbers of cases.
The study suggests more than 650,000 children developed the disease in 2010, while 7.6 million became infected with the TB bacterium. Overall, more than 53 million were estimated to harbour the infection.
