Coventry Blaze have made a unique, heart-warming gesture to boost cancer care in Sheffield - ahead of Saturday’s visit by Steelers.

A big travelling support is expected at the Skydome after Steelers promoted an “Invade Coventry” fans appeal. Now Coventry say they will donate £1 for every visiting Steelers fan to Weston Park Cancer unit, a charity supported by Steelers in the name of Wath supporter Amy Usher, who was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer, last year.

Former Steelers captain and Blaze player coach Steven Goertzen is a friend of Amy’s following his time in Sheffield. He said: “Amy was an inspiration last year, she was with us all the way at the Play Offs (see her pictured with her sister Beth and Tim Spencer) and was a big part of our team. When the Blaze advised me that they were offering to support Weston Park I could not have been happier. Its a great gesture in support of a great girl and a fabulous charity.

“I hear hundreds of Steeler fans are travelling down to support the Steelers so it will be a real battle of Blue v Orange.”

Steelers skipper Jonathan Phillips added: “We can’t wait to skate out and see an orange wave in that building. It will certainly drive us on knowing we have so huge support. Also a big thank you to Blaze for agreeing to support Weston Park in Amy’s name. Amy is well known in the hockey community.

“A great girl with a superb family behind her. They are all going through a tough time and ice hockey seem to have given her a real boost. Anything we can do for Amy we try to. We know she will be supporting us in Coventry and will be trying to win for here.”
