If you’re planning a 2,500 mile road trip from Sheffield to Slovakia and back you really do need a good set of wheels.
Or you could do it the Paul Howard way and set out on your motoring adventure in a £400 banger – with your fingers crossed!
Paul, community liaison manager at Sheffield’s Parkwood Academy, is embarking on the Czecheap Challenge – a marathon journey through Belgium, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia and back again – in a 1997 VW Golf GTI. And his ultimate goal – apart from getting there and back in one piece - is to raise at least £1,000 for Sheffield’s St Luke’s Hospice.
The challenge will set off on May 22 and all vehicles taking part must be at least 15 years old and worth no more than £400.
Paul, who will be joined by wife Judy, has already set the fundraising ball rolling by selling advertising space on the car, which will be sold off afterwards to give a boost to the final total.
The students in the academy are also helping to raise money through cake sales and donations.
