The emergency department at Sheffield Children’s Hospital is one of the best in the country for meeting waiting time targets, according to new results.

In total, 97.5 per cent of patients were seen inside the winter target time of four hours – nearly 5 per cent better than the national average.

Derek Burke, medical director and emergency department consultant, said: “The emergency department sees about 1,000 attendances every week and to be consistently outperforming the national target this winter is an excellent achievement for our hardworking and dedicated team of support staff, nurses and doctors.”

Results published by the BBC covered a 20-week period from November to March.
