FORMER Barnsley defender Scott Jones, who famously scored twice against Manchester United in a FA Cup replay win at Oakwell, was back in action this week to help a health awareness project.
Yorkshire-based company, SportActiv are looking to promote health and well-being through sport and Scott captained a health campaign side against Athersley Rec with the campaign launched to give men aged between 50 and 65 a chance to exercise, socialise and get involved in sport whilst boosting their health.
Most had not played 11-a-side for over 20 years and many never under floodlights. NHS funded, the project is aimed at those at risk of hypertension or heart disease as well as other illnesses and now has around 20 regulars who link up every week to play five-a-side football. It has been a huge triumph, the men experiencing lifestyle changes, losing weight and becoming far more sociable.
