Researcher’s parasite ‘food map’ to help develop drugs

A Sheffield researcher has helped to create a new ‘food map’ of parasites which live inside the body in the hope of developing new treatments.

Dr Emily Griffiths, a former PhD student at Sheffield University, worked with fellow academics to compile lists of parasites that infect humans, and the body parts which bugs cluster around.

The results should make it easier for doctors to create treatments targeting more than one infection at once.

Dr Griffiths said the next step was to find out why some ‘co-infections’ pose bigger health risks than others.
