The British Red Cross is launching a drive for more volunteers to offer extra care for people.
Independent Living will be launched in Rotherham in August and the Red Cross is hoping to recruit volunteers.
Volunteers could be asked to accompany a person to a support group for the first time, go shopping with them or spend time with them over a cup of tea.
Ann Williams, British Red Cross service manager in Yorkshire, said: “Sometimes people need help in the short term. We are looking for people who are able to give their time to support others.”
The new service is being set up to try to keep people living independently as long as possible.
Ann said more volunteers would improve the lives of vulnerable people who often feel alone and isolated.
She said: “The idea behind the service is to make sure people get the help they deserve in their own homes.”
“A simple chat or a welcome friend can make a huge difference.”
