A gold medal-winning boxer is to open a new health unit in Sheffield next week.

Nicola Adams, who triumphed in the 2012 Olympics, will unveil the clinical immunology and allergy unit at the Northern General Hospital next Wednesday.

Her coach Alwyn Belcher, of Burncross, suffers from a condition which lowers his immune system and visits the unit every three weeks to have a drip infusion which gives him the antibodies his body needs to fight off infection.

The 78-year-old said: “The new unit is an absolute dream for us patients, the facilities and staff are brilliant.”

The unit was relocated to the hospital last year and offers a larger capacity day case area, more consulting rooms, and improved facilities for patients and staff.
