Obese Sheffield women in drug trial

OBESE pregnant women in Sheffield are taking part in a drugs trial in the hope of reducing complications among overweight mums-to-be.

The women, along with others from Liverpool, Coventry and Edinburgh, are among 400 taking the diabetes drug metformin, to help control blood sugar levels.

Edinburgh University researchers are carrying out the trial, hoping it will reduce problems obese pregnant women area more likely to suffer, including gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia and the need to have a Caesarean section.

Obese mothers have also been found to be 10 times more likely to suffer from chest infections compared with pregnant women of a healthy weight.
