A NURSE from St Luke’s Hospice is heading for the hills to take on a mountain bike challenge in aid of the place where he works.

Shaun Derby wants to raise at least £500 for the Little Common Lane hospice when he takes part in the annual Phil and Friends 150km bike ride around some of the Peak District’s most picturesque but hilly locations.

Shaun and other riders will set off from Stannington before taking on the tough terrain around Holme Moss, Winnats Pass and Monsal Head, as well as the villages of Bradfield, Hope, Castleton, Tideswell, Calver and Hathersage.

After several months of training, Shaun expects to complete the course in less than eight hours, at the same time as raising vital cash for the hospice during its 40th anniversary year.

He said: “Working at St Luke’s, I know how important it is that we raise as much money as possible.

“It’s going to be a hard day but every mile means a boost for the hospice.”

The event takes place on Sunday August 7.
