A STATE-of-the-art unit which helps people suffering digestive disorders has been opened officially by a Sheffield MP.
Hillsborough and Brightside MP David Blunkett attended the official launch of the Gastrointestinal Physiology services unit at the Northern General.
The new development now provides diagnostics in both upper and lower gastrointestinal physiology, utilising state-of-the-art equipment and expert skills.
It also offers a new service for patients suffering from bowel incontinence, which involves the patient attending the new unit once or twice a week to undergo stimulation of the posterior tibial nerve – located above the ankle.
The procedure, which lasts 30 minutes, is resulting in a significant improvement in patients’ symptoms.
Bosses say the unit will “will help us continue give patients first class care.”
