A Sheffield community leisure venue has extended the end date for free fitness sessions as part of a campaign to get more women and girls involved in sport and exercise.

Free gym sessions for women, which are part of This Girl Can and are run entirely by females, will continue to be available at Heeley Swimming Pool and Gym every Saturday from 3-5pm until 26 September.

Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign was originally launched in January this year and is being been delivered locally by Sheffield City Trust (SCT) - a local charity with the sole charitable aim of improving the health and wellbeing of the Sheffield population.

The campaign is now in its second phase.

Dawn Hickman, who is a director at SCT, said: “Heeley prides itself on the welcoming environment which it provides and this is helping to attract women to give sport and exercise a go.

“We’re trying to break down the barriers women face when it comes to getting active – one of them being a ‘fear of being judged’ and the activities we’ve run as part of the campaign have certainly helped to do that.”

SCT runs venues across Sheffield, including The English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EISS), Hillsborough Leisure Centre and Ponds Forge International Sports Centre.
