A care minister visited Sheffield for talks on mental health services in the city.
Norman Lamb, the care and support minister, discussed the impact that waiting time standards would have on mental health services with representatives from the local NHS.
From next April patients needing treatment for conditions such as depression will be guaranteed to get help in a maximum of 18 weeks.
Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg invited Mr Lamb to Sheffield.
He said: “It’s wrong that relatives and friends needing a hip operation can expect treatment within a clear timeframe but someone with a debilitating mental health condition has no clarity about when they will get help.
“At least one in four of us will experience a mental health problem in our lives.”
