A barber is planning to leave his scissors behind to take on the challenge of a lifetime in memory of a young customer.
Mark Stevenson will be trekking across five volcanoes in Ecuador to raise money for the specialist teenage cancer unit at Sheffield’s Weston Park Hospital.
The 50-year-old’s 15-day journey is to remember Edward Gray, who was treated on the unit but died, aged 19, from a brain tumour.
Mark, from Chesterfield, said he has a target of £10,000, which he is well on the way to reaching after organising a golf day and charity dinner.
Edward was a former customer of Mark’s, and also regularly played golf with him.
The pinnacle of the fundraising challenge will be ascending Cotopaxi – the world’s highest active volcano.
Mark said: “The team of staff on the unit were absolutely fantastic when caring for Edward.
“I want to raise as much as possible so this level of care continues to be available for younger patients, both now and in the future.”
