It’s time to start signing up to help transform Sheffield Children’s Hospital – as Make It Better Day returns!

The scent of fresh baking was in the air when patients, their families and friends got together to launch the second dedicated fundraising day in aid of the children’s hospital’s £40 million redevelopment scheme.

To mark the occasion, generous volunteers from cupcake firm Fancie dished out sweet treats to poorly youngsters and staff on the wards.

Bakers from the company, based on Ecclesall Road, served up special cakes with a bespoke design especially for the appeal.

This year Make It Better Day is on Friday, June 27 – and people all over the country are being encouraged to get involved, by holding events ranging from coffee mornings to sponsored zumbathons.

Proceeds will go towards the Children’s Hospital Charity’s appeal to raise £20m over four years for a series of state-of-the-art enhancements, such as specialist medical equipment, single rooms with en-suite facilities and a play tower.

Donations from community supporters will provide half of the money, while the other £10m is coming from big donors such as companies and trusts.

The improvements will boost the big revamp which is now under way at the site on Western Bank.

Around 260 people signed up to hold a host of activities in 2013 and organisers are hoping for a similar response this year.

Events included a mass dance in a school playground, a children’s singalong in the Weston Park bandstand, and a 17-mile sponsored walk by staff at a Sheffield supermarket.

Taxi drivers also pledged their fares to the fund, while hundreds of people turned out for a world record attempt by bouncing on spacehoppers for more than 15 minutes.

David Vernon-Edwards, director of the Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “We were delighted to have Fancie on board and to welcome them into the hospital to help launch Make it Better Day.

“The kids really enjoy creative activity like this – and it is the perfect way to launch our campaign.”

He added: “We are encouraging businesses, corporations and individuals to get involved in Make it Better Day and help us reach our £10m target to transform the hospital into a brighter, child friendly environment for our young patients and their families.”
