A HOSPITAL in South Yorkshire has received top marks from health inspectors, who have praised standards of care, treatment and privacy on its wards.
Barnsley Hospital was praised in a report by the Care Quality Commission watchdog, which paid an unannounced visit, checking four inpatient areas.
Inspectors also spoke to staff, patients and visiting relatives and examined medical notes.
“Without exception, patients spoke very positively about the support, care and treatment they received,” the report said.
“Patients felt that their privacy and dignity had been respected, and they were given appropriate care, treatment and support to meet their needs.”
One patient described a ‘really good, clean, friendly hospital’, while others told inspectors staff were ‘brilliant’ and ‘very caring’.
But the report made recommendations for improvement in two key areas – the level of information given to patients and relatives and ensuring staff are aware of how to raise concerns at work.
Detailed information boards were also on offer on some wards, but not others.
“Some patients and their relatives may not fully understand the care, treatment and support choices available to them,” the report said.
The commission visited gynaecology, cardiology and orthopaedic wards and the stroke unit.
Liz Libiszewski, director of quality and performance at Barnsley Hospital, said: “We are pleased with the results of this report which reflect the hard work and commitment of our staff and high standard of care of our patients.”
She said an action plan to improve the areas recommended was being developed.
