Most women who give birth at Sheffield’s Jessop wing are pleased with their care, according to a review which found more than 95 per cent of new mums said they were treated with ‘respect, kindness and dignity’.

The national study of 66 UK maternity hospitals has been issued by the Care Quality Commission, and covered the care provided from the time pregnant women first access maternity services to their sign-off by the midwife – usually around 10 days after the birth.

In Sheffield, the results were based on a sample of 243 mothers who had babies in February this year.

Over 95 per cent of the women said they were treated with respect and dignity during labour and birth, while around 95 per cent said facilities were ‘very clean’ or ‘fairly clean’.

Meanwhile, more than 96 per cent said they had confidence and trust in the staff caring for them during labour and birth.

The survey, carried out by Picker Institute Europe, took into account staffing levels, numbers of midwives and consultants, the mothers’ own views about standards of care and the welfare of mothers and babies.

Hilary Chapman, chief nurse at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I am delighted that new mums and the Care Quality Commission have rated our services so highly.

“All of our maternity staff are passionate about the care they give to mothers, fathers and their babies, and the unit prides itself on giving a professional, high- quality, caring service.

“Despite our results showing that overall our women receive excellent care, the survey highlighted a few areas in which we will look to improve, such as postnatal care.”

Mum-of-three Katy Cavell, aged 26, gave birth to her baby boy, Alex, at the Jessop wing in August.

“My care was brilliant,” said Katy, from Southey.

“My baby was breech so I had a team of very experienced midwives on standby. The midwives catered for everything, they were really attentive to all my needs.”
