A plumber has stepped into the limelight to record a Christmas single to raise funds for hospital patients in Sheffield.
Paul Ballington, from Dinnington, has released the song to help the charity PACT – Parents’ Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia – which helps poorly youngsters at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
The dad-of-two was inspired to record the track, called Santa Claus, Am I Naughty or Nice?, after the family of a little girl in his son’s class at Anston Park Infant School was supported by the good cause.
He drafted in school friends to sing the song’s chorus.
Paul, aged 36, said: “I’ve always wanted to write a Christmas song, but I’ve never got around to doing it.
“When I heard about the support the family had received from PACT and the difference it made to them, I just wanted to do something to help.
“The kids were amazing and it was great to get them all involved and watch the excitement when they recorded their lines. Each and every one of them was a true professional.”
Paul said he has written songs occasionally for 15 years, starting with humorous birthday tunes for friends and family.
More recently he has started penning tailor-made songs for occasions such as weddings.
Paul said: “Hopefully my song will raise some much-needed money to support other families dealing with childhood cancer.
“I love singing and making people laugh and hopefully the light-hearted lyrics will put a smile on people’s faces this Christmas.”
Rachel Turton, music co-ordinator at Anston Park, said: “The children loved the funny lyrics in the song and thoroughly enjoyed singing it.”
The charity was founded in 1977 when eight parents created a support group for families whose children had cancer.
Gradually its remit has expanded to include children with leukaemia, helping to provide hospital equipment and facilities.
Robin Jeeps, PACT trustee and vice-chairman, said: “We think the song is a great idea.
“It is a fabulous way to raise awareness of the work we do for children and their families, especially at this time of the year when he can put a smile on people’s faces as well.”
n The track is available now as a download on Amazon and iTunes, priced 89p.
