HEALTH bosses are planning a shake-up in the way they look after children in Doncaster.
The GP-led organisations responsible for designing and paying for health services in the borough is drawing up plans for a community-based paediatric service to care for children and young people and they want local people to help them by sharing their thoughts on the proposals.
Jointly commissioned by NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group and its Bassetlaw equivent, the new consultant led service will focus on children living in the two areas and offer equal access to ensure that they are able to receive the health care they need.
It would aim to provide more care and routine appointments away from hospital settings, so children with a range of on-going health conditions like autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder will be able to get the care
they need closer to home in community clinics.
Dr Pat Barbour, from NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group, is leading the development of the new service. She said: “It will provide paediatric assessment and diagnosis of children who have been identified as having a need. Two newly appointed community paediatricians will lead the service and will work with other professionals from health, education and social care to provide multi-disciplinary paediatric assessment, diagnosis and treatment.”
“We have started an engagement programme which will run until the end of May and will be discussing our plans with interested groups. We would like to hear from anyone who has a view on our plans.”
Dr Mike Ho from Bassetlaw CCG said “The new community paediatric service will improve support for children and their family and clinicians working with other professionals will ensure that the child’s health, educational and social needs are all considered in their ongoing care.”
The service will be available later this year to children and young people who are registered with a GP in Doncaster and Bassetlaw and live within the boundary of Doncaster Council or Bassetlaw Council.
