A NEW drug is being made available at Barnsley Hospital to combat stroke.
The pill, Eliquis apixaban, has recently been approved by the European Medicines Agency and can be now be used for patients with an irregular heart beat to prevent a stroke.
Barnsley Hospital’s Consultant Stroke Physician Dr Albazzaz and Sister Gamble from the hospital’s research and development team have been involved in two landmark studies over the last five years that have been successful in bringing the medicine to patients.
Barnsley Hospital recruited the second highest number of patients in the UK to a study that resulted in the new pill being licensed.
