MP’s plea over cigs packaging

SOUTH Yorkshire MP Kevin Barron is urging the Government to commit to legislation to put all cigarettes in standard packaging.

Mr Barron, who represents Rother Valley and is vice-chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Smoking and Health, highlighted a lack of progress six months after public consultation on the plans ended.

The Labour MP is unhappy that cigarette packs are ‘being used to promote the product’.

Mr Barron said: “There’s a reason why the tobacco industry spends thousands of pounds each year on making their packs more attractive - it works.

“Standard tobacco packaging will stop the public being misled about the dangers of smoking and will make cigarettes less attractive.”
