A South Yorkshire football star is urging fundraisers to show their pedal power by signing up for a hospice’s first cycling event.

The Rotherham Hospice Sportive is happening on Sunday, July 20, following a route through the town.

Proceeds will go towards the hospice’s work looking after terminally ill people – and the ride is being backed by Rotherham United coach Paul Warne.

Paul, who clocked up more than 250 appearances for the Millers before retiring two years ago, helped to launch the event alongside patients and staff, donning his cycling gear specially for the occasion.

Actor Dean Andrews – from the hit television dramas Life on Mars and Last Tango in Halifax – has also pledged his support.

Two routes are on offer of varying length and difficulty.

The first, a 65-mile ride through Rotherham, starts at 9.30am and costs £19 to enter.

The second, aimed at families, begins at 11am and costs £8 to enter.

Admission includes all registration fees and insurance through British Cycling, plus refreshments.

When they get back cyclists will be able to enjoy a barbecue and activities provided by the hospice.

Ashley Corker, a fundraiser for the charity, said: “This is the first ever Rotherham Hospice cycle event and we are hoping cyclists young and old come along and have a fantastic day while helping us to raise much-needed funds.”

Ashley added: “We are confident we can make this a success and hopefully it will become something we stage annually.”
