A BLOOD donor who has saved potentially hundreds of lives has been honoured for his dedication.
Retired engineer David Shaw, aged 67, has given blood a milestone 75 times – enough to save the lives of up to 225 patients in local hospitals.
He was honoured for the achievement at an awards ceremony held by the NHS Blood and Transplant service.
Mr Shaw, from Wickersley, Rotherham, has been giving blood for 45 years.
He said: “It seemed the right thing to do and you never know when you might need the service yourself.”
Holly Mason, lead donor relations manager with NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “The dedication of all our donors is wonderful. We hope it inspires existing donors to keep giving regularly, and new donors to come forward, especially young people.
“With Mother’s Day approaching, we’re asking people to think about the mums and babies they could help with their donation – each one can potentially save the lives of three adults or seven babies.
“We urge both existing and new donors to help save lives by booking into one of their local sessions as soon as they can.”
Blood donor sessions are taking place at the leisure complex, Effingham Street, Rotherham, tomorrow and Friday, March 15, between 12noon and 2.30pm, and 4pm and 6.30pm.
