A DAUGHTER who wanted to thanks staff at the hospital which cared for her dying mother has become the first person to sign up for a charity run.

Vicky Early, aged 41, from Wombwell, near Barnsley, will be wearing the number one vest at Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s annual ’Run in the Park’.

The event includes a 10k race and 3k fun run and takes place on Sunday, July 14, at Graves Park in Sheffield.

Vicky said she was eager to take part so she could thank the nurses who cared for her mum Janice Turton, who died in December, aged 75.

She said: “We found out my mother had lung cancer at the end of November and it was at quite a progressed stage. She underwent treatment at Weston Park and the nurses were fantastic.

“It all happened very quickly, but the nurses at Weston Park were fantastic throughout so I wanted to say thank you to them by trying to raise money by competing in my first ever run.

“My mum doted on Aidan and when I told him I was doing the charity run he asked if he could too as he wanted to help make people better.

“So Aidan and my husband, John, will be taking part in the 3k fun run on the day as well.”

Helen Gentle, from Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, said: “Last year’s event attracted more than 1,100 runners of all ages and abilities and hundreds of spectators, so there is a really great atmosphere on the day.”
